The LIFE & COPE Series is a flagship initiative of the Afghan American Women’s Association A-AWA, established to promote self development, self efficacy, and psychological wellbeing within the Afghan American community. As the first initiative of its kind dedicated specifically to self growth, mental and emotional wellbeing, and professional coping strategies, LIFE & COPE has created a sustained platform for culturally responsive psychoeducation and collective healing
The LIFE & COPE Series directly advances A-AWA’s mission by providing community-based mental health education, integration support, and culturally grounded programming for women and displaced families. Through structured psychoeducation, dialogue, and skill-building, the program strengthens families’ capacity to resettle, adapt, and thrive within their new environment. By promoting psychological well-being, resilience, and social connection, LIFE & COPE contributes to A-AWA’s broader vision of building sustainable support structures that empower women and displaced families to become confident, integrated, and productive members of society.
The series began in October 2015 with its inaugural presentation on migration and its impact on immigrant families. Over the years, programming expanded to address war trauma, stress management, parenting in America, and reducing stigma surrounding mental health. What began as a quarterly in person gathering continues today as a quarterly community based program committed to fostering connection, education, and resilience.
Over the past two years, LIFE & COPE has intentionally expanded to serve newly arrived Afghan refugees following the recent influx into the United States. This expansion reflects A-AWA’s deep commitment to supporting families navigating displacement, resettlement, and complex cultural transitions. Through its quarterly gatherings, the series has addressed timely and culturally grounded themes including Resilience Across Generations From Surviving to Belonging, Healing Through Narratives The Power of Story, The Power of Positive Thoughts and Health, Healthy Mind Healthy Body, The Impact of Complex Trauma, and Healthy Family Healthy Society. These sessions provide structured psychoeducation alongside reflective dialogue, creating space for community connection and healing as families rebuild their lives.
Each session brings together trained volunteers, mental health professionals, life coaches, and community members to engage in evidence informed discussion and skill building. Participants gain practical tools to navigate life’s challenges while strengthening collective resilience, social cohesion, and a shared sense of belonging.
The program’s sustained growth has been made possible through an extensive volunteer network. Professional psychologists and life coaches ensure high quality, culturally grounded programming, while outreach teams support transportation, logistics, and community engagement. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, A-AWA’s youth group A-AWAGAK recently launched a childcare initiative during events, enabling young mothers to participate fully.
By raising awareness about critical challenges affecting Afghan families, including complex trauma, intergenerational stress, and acculturation pressures, LIFE & COPE fosters resolution, unity, and collective empowerment. With continued funding and community support, the program will remain free of cost and continue expanding its reach. Through education, compassion, and culturally responsive care, LIFE & COPE is helping cultivate a stronger, healthier, and more resilient Afghan American community, one that moves from surviving toward truly belonging.
